This Masterclass focuses on the practical demands of treating complex trauma. The emphasis is on keeping therapy effective without exceeding what a particular patient can tolerate.

Drawing on structural dissociation theory and phase-oriented treatment, Kathy Steele examines the clinical decisions that determine outcome: when to consolidate, when to deepen the work and when to pause.

Complex trauma treatment requires precise attention to how a patient’s internal world is organised, what stabilises it and what risks overwhelming it.

Key questions include:

  • How do we adapt intervention to the patient’s internal organisation?
  • When is trauma processing clinically appropriate and when is it premature?
  • How do we promote integration without increasing fragmentation?
  • How do we maintain therapeutic momentum without compromising stability?

The session will explore:

  • Developing and refining formulation in complex trauma and complex PTSD
  • Recognising dissociative processes in routine clinical work
  • Working with trauma-related parts to increase cooperation rather than deepen division
  • Calibrating pacing within a phased treatment framework
  • Identifying early signs of destabilisation and adjusting accordingly

About Kathy Steele

Kathy Steele in sand circle bgKathy Steele is a clinician, author and teacher whose work has shaped contemporary understanding of complex trauma and dissociation. As co-developer of structural dissociation theory and a leading voice in phase-oriented trauma treatment, she has influenced how trauma therapy is taught and practised internationally.

Her writing and teaching draws directly from decades of clinical work with highly dissociative patients. She addresses the practical realities of stabilisation, pacing and countertransference, and the risks of moving too quickly in trauma therapy.

Her work repeatedly comes back to the realities of trauma treatment: the need for clear formulation, steady pacing and an ongoing awareness of how easily therapy can become destabilising.
